Teamsters 'team up' with Dakotans for Health to expand Medicaid

Local 120 "Teams Up" with Grassroots Group to Expand Medicaid

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters local 120 today announced their support for Dakotans for Health and its constitutional amendment to expand Medicaid in 2022, citing the organization’s strong commitment to working families.

The Teamsters have a friend in Dakotans for Health,” said Local 120 Business Agent James Heeren. “Our members in North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota can rest assured that Dakotans for Health will always be on the side of working Americans supporting their right to organize, their desire for fair wages, and the right of their fellow citizens to affordable healthcare.

Dakotans for Health has been circulating an initiated constitutional amendment to expand Medicaid since last November that would provide Medicaid health insurance to South Dakotans who make less than $17,000 a year.

We are grateful for the support of the Teamsters because we need an incredibly strong labor movement that has to grow in America,” said Adam Weiland, a co-founder of Dakotans for Health. “Not only that, they have the resources and boots on the ground we need to qualify for our constitutional amendment to expand Medicaid in 2022. It is an honor to have their support.”Weiland said.

The non-partisan South Dakota Legislative Research Council has estimated that 42,500 people would be eligible, and that the Federal government would provide over 90% of the cost, estimated to be close to $300 million dollars each and every year, a 15-1 return on investment. South Dakota is one of 12 states that has refused to participate in this federal program made available by the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010.
