Yesterday, Senator Mike Rounds introduced the “Returning Education to Our States Act” to the Senate, which aims to abolish the Department of Education. As the state that receives the 5th most federal funding for schools, this proposal is antithetical to South Dakota’s values. The Department of Education is a critical tool for promoting equity—especially for our rural schools—maintaining standards, and supporting public education at all levels. In Idaho, doctors recently testified about the horrifying consequences of the state’s total abortion ban—women forced to travel for hours, through deserts, without access to emergency care, just to seek life-saving medical treatment. Some are transferred alone, with no family or support, and face dangerous delays of up to 8 hours. These bans put lives at risk every single day.

In South Dakota, the reality is just as devastating. Our state’s extreme abortion ban forces women to carry pregnancies to term—even in cases of rape, incest, or fatal fetal abnormalities. These are not isolated stories. This is the grim reality for women in states with abortion bans.

Over the last two years of this campaign, thousands of South Dakota women have shared their abortion stories with us—whether while signing our petition, in private messages on social media, or in line at the grocery store when they noticed our 'Restore Roe' sweatshirts. Each story was different, each woman's circumstance unique, but every voice shared the same urgency to share their deep, personal understanding of why abortion rights matter so much to South Dakota women.
